Built by a Rider, for Riders

Digital Helmet Cameras was founded by Ryan Williams, a motorcycle rider and camera reviewer based in Denver, Colorado. Ryan has been riding for 14 years — commuting daily across Denver, touring through the Rockies and the American Southwest, and running track days at High Plains Raceway.

The site started in 2019 for a specific reason: Ryan was hit by a car that ran a red light on his morning commute. The driver denied fault, there were no witnesses, and Ryan had no camera footage. The insurance claim went nowhere. He spent the next several months researching and testing every helmet camera he could find, determined never to be in that position again.

What he found was that most camera buying advice online was written by people who had never actually mounted a camera to a helmet and ridden with it. Reviews focused on lab specs rather than real-world performance — wind noise at 70 mph, battery life in cold mountain air, whether the mount holds through a pothole on a gravel road.

That gap is what Digital Helmet Cameras exists to fill.

What We Test and How

Ryan has personally tested more than 35 helmet cameras and action cameras since 2019, including models from GoPro, DJI, Insta360, Garmin, INNOVV, Sena, and Techalogic. Every camera reviewed on this site has been mounted to a real helmet and used on real rides — not just unboxed and filmed in a studio.

Testing covers:

  • Video quality at highway speeds (65–80 mph) in varying light conditions
  • Wind noise and audio performance with and without a windscreen
  • Stabilization on rough roads and gravel
  • Battery life in cold weather (Colorado winters) and heat
  • Mount security and vibration resistance
  • App and firmware reliability over extended use

Editorial Standards

Every review and buying guide on Digital Helmet Cameras is written by Ryan Williams based on direct product testing. We do not publish reviews of cameras we have not personally used. Specifications are verified against manufacturer data sheets and independent lab tests where available.
